7:55PM - Alkali metal + water

What exactly is the reaction that takes place between alkali metals and H2O? What is the mechanism? I know it involves the highly exothermic loss of an unpaired electron from the metal and that the products are the metal hydroxide and H2.

10:15PM

I dreamt last night that one of my teeth just fell out. Then I proceeded to probe the fleshy gum where it had been with my tongue.

I also dreamt that I was at this beach house place and there were a bunch of people there, but more importantly Tucker was there, and Frank (the pug we "dogsat" for a year), and some other little yippy dog who didn't matter so much. And for whatever reason I was feeling emotionally needy and snuggling Frank and then he told me that I was invading his space or something. I don't remember what he said, but he spoke and told me to back off. It was upsetting.

3:09PM - Butterfly emergency

Hey guys, I was in my (dried) pool today and I noticed a butterfly pupa inside it. She hasn't made a coccoon, and it doesn't seem good for her to just stay there, doesn't seem like she'll be able to complete her metamorphosis in there, and also it's been raining a lot and I feel she could detach sometime. Should I try to move her? Or maybe that could make things even worse?
EDIT - Here are a couple of pics. )

11:43PM - Probably a simple question with a simple answer.

Ok, so I'm an A level chemistry student, who has recently carried out my chemistry investigation. I'm still working on my research, and I realised that I actually don't have the order of the decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide when catalysed with Manganese Dioxide.

I've tried finding it- google has failed me, as it seems to have done pretty constantly throughout my whole investigation, and I was wondering if anyone knew it? So far, the closest I've gotten is a pseudo-first-order rate, which doesn't overly help me.

Thank you in advance.

THE PLIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by [info]bellydancindan, [info]dragonflymusic, and [info]zekiwolf

T'was the night before Christmas
At the bottom of the house,
Daniel, Allie, and Zeki
Watched a man kill his spouse

A cake in the oven,
Zek's dog Tri on the floor,
Daniel in the bathroom -
His arm was quite sore

Hours prior Zek bit him
As they fought for a seat;
He had called shotgun,
She would not admit defeat

The two girls threw crackers
at this delicate man
When Daniel thought his pain was over,
Then it truly began

There was a knock at the door
Our three heroes peeked;
Santa Claus had a chainsaw
The future looked bleak

He killed Daniel first
The boy went down without a fight
"Merry Christmas," spat Santa,
"This will be your last night."

Allie went down next -
She screamed as she went -
"Merry Christmas," growled Santa,
"Your life is now spent."

Zeki was last
With a brutal demise
"Merry Christmas," snarled Santa,
"This is for all your lies."

His grisly deed done,
Santa laughed like a goat,
but Zeki's dog Tri then
Tore out his throat.

Vengeance had been taken,
the trusty dog won the fight
"Merry Christmas," said Tri,
"And to all a good night."

6:20PM - trail cam photos - Jefferson Forest trail

I headed back out to the top of the mountain today, just to grab the cam and head back. Now I'm just antsy to get back out there and set it up tomorrow!

Cut for the particularly squeamish out there - both text and pictures are graphic. )

12:13PM - Soliciting Sample Organic Qualitative Analysis Questions

I have an organic lab test coming up next week that includes qualitative analysis. I expect questions to appear on it that look like those in the Mohrig Qualitative Analysis Prelab.

Here's one of those questions:
7. A compound of bp 152°–153°C is water-insoluble and insoluble in 2.5 M NaOH, 1.5 M HCl, and concentrated H2SO4. The original compound reacts negatively to a 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine test. The 1H NMR spectrum produces the following signals: 1.25ppm, 6H, d; 2.9 ppm, 1H, septet; 7.1–7.4ppm, 5H, m. The proton-decoupled 13C NMR spectrum shows singlets at 22, 34.5, 126, 127, 129, and 149 ppm. The IR spectrum shows four peaks between 2980–2800cm–1 and three peaks in the 3100–3000cm–1 region. Deduce the structure and name of the compound and assign all spectral absorptions.

I'm enjoying these, and I think I ought to do more of them. If you have questions like this accessible, I would appreciate it hugely if you'd post them. Or maybe we could all compose a few and bookmark them on the info page for other people looking for practice.

Good luck on incipient finals if you have them, and thanks!

3:12PM - Big News

ThouShaltNot is in the process of recording our new album, and we are pleased to invite you to a special rehearsal/recital session, during which the band will, on piano, guitar, and drums, play through a whole set of brand new, never-before-heard songs (and maybe a few old favorites too). Fans will get the chance to comment and vote on songs, giving their input into the new ThouShaltNot material as we sculpt the album.

This is a one-time only opportunity for an intimate performance. It will happen next Saturday night, December 12, in Granville, Ohio (45 minutes east of Columbus. Seats are very limited.

Additionally, ThouShaltNot are releasing their first new track since 2006's Land Dispute. The ballad "Sick" will be appearing on the Metropolis Records compilation Electronic Saviors, a 5 CD benefit album for the Foundation for Cancer Research and Wellness, organized by the band's longtime friend, DJ Hiem (who himself beat cancer last year).

The compilation is a virtual Who's Who of industrial music. In addition to ThouShaltNot, also appearing are Combichrist, Ego Likeness, Assemblage 23, Stromkern, Freezepop, Spahn Ranch, Leather Strip, Dismantled, Chemlab, Gencab, FleshField, The Azoic, and many others. Iris appears on the compilation as well, with an exclusive remix of "Imposter" by ThouShaltNot. You can read more about this amazing set and buy it here.
